My background

A career spent building and improving software

I’ve spent much of my career working directly with software, designing it, building it, testing it and dealing with what happens when it meets real users and real data.

As my roles have grown, so has the scope of the decisions I’ve been responsible for. That has included architecture, technical direction, engineering practices, modernising existing systems, live-service reliability and helping developers grow.

I still enjoy being close to the technical work. It helps me understand the practical consequences of decisions, whether that means choosing an approach for something new, improving what already exists or helping a team deliver more effectively.

My approach

What that experience means for you

Technical depth

I’m comfortable working through architecture, backend systems, APIs and integrations, testing, cloud systems, observability, modernisation and production support. My hands-on background includes Scala, but my work is not tied to one language or stack.

Practical judgement

Experience is also knowing what is worth doing. I start with the business problem, weigh cost, risk and maintainability, and look for ways to improve existing systems before recommending a rebuild. I aim for solutions that do enough without adding unnecessary complexity.

Working with people

I work directly with clients and development teams, explaining decisions, weighing trade-offs and helping people make good technical choices. When a team needs direction, I work collaboratively on engineering practices and processes, with space to mentor developers rather than impose process.

Independent consultancy

Why Mugnai Digital

Mugnai Digital gives me a way to bring my experience directly to businesses that need it.

Sometimes that means taking responsibility for a specific project. Sometimes it means improving technology a business already relies on, or working alongside an existing development team. Sometimes it starts with a conversation about something that isn’t working quite as it should.

Working independently means I can shape the engagement around the problem rather than assuming every business needs a large project or a complicated solution.
