What Google's AI Search Means for Your Business Website
Google Search is changing, and it's leaving a lot of business owners wondering whether the rules have changed too.

Over the past year, Google has started using AI to answer more questions directly in its search results. It's a significant shift, and understandably many business owners are wondering what it means for their own website. If people can get answers without visiting your website, does your website still matter?
The short answer is yes, but perhaps not for the reasons you might expect. AI is changing how people discover businesses online, but it hasn't changed what people are looking for once they've found one. They still want confidence that they're dealing with the right business, and your website is often where that confidence is built.
What the latest research is showing
One of the biggest misconceptions is that AI will replace websites altogether. In reality, Google is changing how it presents information, not removing the need for businesses to have a strong online presence. The businesses that explain what they do clearly, answer real customer questions and demonstrate genuine expertise are still in the strongest position.
This isn't just industry speculation. Recent studies suggest that when Google's AI-generated answers (known as AI Overviews) appear in search results, significantly fewer people click through to websites. Instead, many users simply read Google's answer and continue with their day.
That's a big change from how search has worked for the last twenty years, and it means the way your website appears in search results is becoming less about getting clicks and more about being recognised as a credible source worth citing.
Does that mean websites are becoming less important?
Not at all. In fact, we'd argue they're becoming more important.
Google's AI still needs reliable websites to learn from. It looks for businesses that clearly explain what they do, provide useful information and demonstrate genuine expertise. In other words, Google still needs good websites—it's just using them in a different way.
One thing we've noticed when looking at small business websites is that owners usually know exactly what makes their business different. Unfortunately, their website often doesn't communicate that as clearly. Visitors can be left wondering exactly what the business does, who it's for or what they should do next.
Our view
Google may be changing the way people discover websites, but it hasn't changed what makes a website valuable. Businesses that explain what they do clearly, answer genuine customer questions and demonstrate real expertise are giving both people and search engines much stronger reasons to trust them.
Why small businesses should care
Many small businesses only think about their website when something breaks or it's time for a redesign. The reality is that the way people find and evaluate businesses online is shifting, and a website that worked brilliantly a few years ago might not be doing enough today.
People still need to trust your business before they get in touch. They still want answers to their questions. They still compare you with competitors before making a decision. Your website is often the first impression they'll have of your business, and as search changes, that first impression becomes even more important.
So, what should you be doing?
Before worrying about AI or SEO, it's worth making sure your website is doing the basics well. A surprising number of businesses overlook simple things that make a real difference to how both visitors and search engines understand their site.
Ask yourself a few simple questions:
- Is it immediately obvious what your business does?
- Does your website answer the questions customers ask you every day?
- Is the information accurate and up to date?
- Are you showing real examples of your work?
- Is the website easy to use on a mobile phone?
- Does it load quickly?
- Is it easy for both visitors and search engines to understand?
These aren't new ideas, but they're becoming increasingly important as search technology evolves.
There's also a growing temptation to use AI to generate hundreds of articles just to fill a website with content. We think that's the wrong approach. A handful of well-written articles that genuinely help your customers are likely to be far more valuable than dozens of generic AI-written pages. When Google's AI decides which sources to trust and cite, genuine depth and expertise matter more than sheer volume.
For most businesses, the answer isn't to start again—it's to improve clarity, structure and content so that the website genuinely serves the people reading it.
How Mugnai Digital can help
Many business owners simply don't have time to keep up with changes in search technology, and they shouldn't have to. Our role is to understand those changes, separate genuine improvements from passing trends, and help businesses make sensible decisions without unnecessary complexity or expense.
Whether we're building a brand-new website or improving an existing one, we make sure it's designed for real people first while keeping pace with how search technology continues to evolve. Sometimes that means improving the structure of a website. Sometimes it's making your content clearer. Sometimes it's identifying technical issues that are holding your website back. And sometimes it's simply helping you understand what actually matters and ignoring the noise.
Our aim is always the same: to build websites that inspire confidence, showcase your expertise and help your business grow.
Is your website ready?
Google will continue to evolve, just as it always has. The businesses that do well over the long term won't be the ones chasing every new trend—they'll be the ones with websites that are useful, trustworthy and genuinely helpful to the people they're trying to reach.
